A Day Fishing Trip in Homer, Alaska

There are many towns to visit and attractions to see on the Kenai Peninsula. We highly recommend you add Homer to your itinerary. Homer is located about 1 hour and 44 minutes away from our lodge and offers a beautiful scenic drive with a one of a kind town. The Sterling Highway will take you past the towns of Kasilof, Clam Gulch, Ninilchik, Anchor Point, and finally into Homer, the end of the road. If you make the drive on a nice day, you will see some amazing views of the mountains and Kachemak Bay, the location of Homer Spit. For our guests who would like to book an ocean charter, Homer is a great option for you!

An ocean trip out of Homer will take a full day. Typically, your captain will ask you to be at the dock by 6am, and you will not return until 6pm. We recommend that you leave our lodge two hours before the scheduled departure. You will need to be sure to bring your fishing license and government issued ID for this trip. If you are interested in fishing for salmon, you will need a salmon tag. You can purchase your fish licenses and tags on http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/. Be sure to dress in layers and bring warm gear, waterproof boots, and a waterproof rain jacket/pants. You can also pack a cooler of drinks (water, juice, alcohol, etc.) and food (sandwiches, chips, granola bars, etc.).

Once your boat leaves the port, it could take 1-2 hours to reach your fishing location. If anyone in your party gets motion sick, we recommend you take a motion sickness medication such as Dramamine or Bonine before getting out on the water!

Depending on which type of chartered fishing package you purchase, you will have the opportunity to catch many species of fish. Most charters offer different packages which include salmon fishing, halibut fishing, or a combo package. We recommend that you choose to do a combo package. This means you can catch your limit of silver salmon, king salmon, black bass, lingcod, and halibut.

Another reason we love ocean charters is the opportunity to sightsee the vast sea life Alaska has to offer. You have the chance to see humpback whales breaching, pods of orcas chasing fish, sea otters feeding on crab while floating on their backs, or porpoises following your boat as you move to different fishing locations. You never know what you will see, but the experience will not disappoint!

My family and I went on a charter in June 2019. We were able to catch our limit of bass and halibut and even caught a feeder king!

If you can't tell by our faces, we had a fantastic time!

This was our fish box by the end of the trip! The larger fish can’t be seen in this photo but are at the bottom of the tank.

Don't forget to take a picture in front of this sign!

We look forward to helping you plan this extraordinary trip!
